Everytime I read Rob Pike's "System Software Research is Irrelevant", I get a little more bummed out. I understand that Pike's being purposefully dramatic but I tend to think he's right. Where's the innovation happening right now?

Is open source good at innovating or is it good at commoditizing? I would say it's 20% applied research innovation and 80% commoditization. Given that, I tend to think open source's most important contribution is neither but instead
