jack and water

Lately my drink of choice has been Jack and water. It's really enjoyable, a nice smoky flavor and has it's own built-in chaser: more whiskey. But when I order it in a bar, people look at me like I'm an alcoholic. Seriously, I hear things like "Rock 'n Roll!", or a person ordering it for me will feel inclined to explain: "it's not for me".

You feelin' me?

When I wanna get drunk, I get whisky straight, no chaser. Solely because of the Thelonious Monk tune. But people just about fall over with shock. At least 25% of the time the bartender gives it to me on the rocks, presumably because they just can't process the idea of a non-iced whisky. (Whiskey?)

I'm feeling you.

Huh, I always worry about which it was, when I write the word. But not any more! Thanks, internet.

Totally, I'm all over that... only my brand is Maker's Mark. http://www.makersmark.com/Home.aspx

Time for you to start reading Bukowski.

BTW, jack and water is resident Stern Show alchoholic Artie Lang's drink of choice. http://www.artielangedeathwatch.com/

I do read Bukowski, I just don't like Maker's Mark very much. :-X

I was always taught that "whisky" should be reserved for Scotch, and that "whiskey" is for everything else.

Being of Scottish decent and a big fan of the peaty goodness, I support that view.

Steve, how goes it?
well, I guess you have two choices:
1) order a jack and coke w/ a jack chaser (yeah, I meant to say that)
2) go to a real bar :)

I'm another fan of Maker's Mark. Here in Kentucky I order it "neat" which is understood as "whiskey in a glass, no ice, no water."

Jack is filtered through charcoal which takes the edge off it and also leaves it sweeter. Water or ice is the only thing that can be added without overwhelming the delicate flavor you're paying a premium price for.

I caught my son around age 18 mixing my Makers with Mountain Dew. He got a proper whoopin' but I made sure he understood why. :-)

Fuck all that noise. On my recent trip to china i discovered the best thing ever (stiff competition for the mojito). Green Tea and Whiskey, sounds weird, I know. But it ownz all your paletes in a very serious way. It's got the nice feature that it brings out all these different flavors in whiskey, not sure how or why that happens, but it's simply delicous.

I never would have guessed that. Great tip.

just a heads-up: "whisky (no e)" refers to whisky from Scotland, or brewed in the style of Scottish Whisky (not to be confused with Scotch, which is made by much stricter standards for ingredient quality and aging); "whiskey" with the e refers to the Irish style. It's mostly just about the ingredients, but there is a rather distinctive difference between the two.

Of course, its hard not to love 'em both.
