If you've used Hymn to strip the DRM from your music, iTunes will not allow you to play that music, and will also remove the music from your iPod. However, if you run all of your modified music through JHymn, and remove the "atoms," everything will work smashingly. Make sure you scrub all of your music through JHymn and remove the atoms, before you install the new versioin of iTunes.
Migrators to Apple's new operating systems talk about their experiences. Some of them come from Classic MacOS, some from Windows, and some from other Unixen.

Works OK here.

Here's a thread from iPodLounge with a bit more about how to make iTunes 4.7.1 play nice with un-DRMed files.
