Full-time Fireball

John Gruber has decided to do Daring Fireball as his main job. If John is able to make DF half as cool as he hopes, it will be a big plus for the online mac community. His smackdowns are things of legend... Bon chance, John!

  • I wish him luck and I think he will do better then Kottke did at attempting the same thing. When Kottke went 'pro' it never seemed like he did anything different, he had nothing more say. Now Grubber seems like he has plenty to say and I think he is a much better writer

  • Kottke made a big noise about making his blog his dayjob so to speak, but all that did was make me wonder what -exactly- it was he -did- for a living.

That is, I saw no visual means of income, or reference to same, from his blog itself, so I always wondered how he thought THAT (blogging) could be self sustaining.

I supposed he helped code some awesome Web 2.0 CSS blogging software or something, that must have been supporting him somehow in the background, but really, I had no clue how he made the jump Blog=Paycheck, from the content that was posted on his blog.

As far as I know, he was famous for going over to Thailand and eating seafood. No disrespect, but the announcement a few months later that he was going to be LESS dependant on his blogging for income came as little surprise. Or the more recent announcement he might, you know, post an ad or something, now.

DF, I might be concerned if gruber can keep up the quality on a daily basis. A weekly recap gives a lot of wrong thinking to react against, he can write something more comprehensive, although the same stuff will be there on a daily basis, to guide to sensibility.

  • I think, in general, "professional bloggers" will speed up the growth of ads present on the Web. What would be the alternatives revenue sources otherwise? I still think donations are a tough call...
