Tim Bray has posted a summary of his experience helping his mom switch to a Mac and promises future updates. The most interesting critique for me was of the Safari search bar, which he calls "a disaster."
The comment about the MS Office trial version being a bad actor is right on. Trial-Office takes all your Office file associations-- and it doesn't let you change them back. It won't allow uninstall, even if you're the administrator. I got rid of it by ignoring all warnings and putting the whole folder in the trash, but a novice might not be so bold.
I tried the usual 'Get Info' routine to change the file associations back to where they should have been-- and as soon as I closed the window, the file associations got changed back to the trial version.
I'm not sure how this happened, but I suspect that OS X keeps a 'this software has never run' flag on applications for security reasons. Maybe the Office trial version kept resetting that flag on the old version... in any case, it was very frustrating.
How could anyone hate the Dock? Compare it side by side to the task bar and quick launch bar abominations in Windows, and how could you not love the Dock?
Migrators to Apple's new operating systems talk about their experiences. Some of them come from Classic MacOS, some from Windows, and some from other Unixen.

at last , the real office version can be launched and it should retake the associations
else the key is the "apple - i"(command+i) shortcut to bring the info finder window about a file and change in it "open with" associations
it's surely one of the most useful mac osx teachings to say : "command-i"
just my thought : I love the dock :)
