Forwarding Address: OS X

Saturday, August 21, 2004

Well, I've been "contributing" here for two whole years now. A big thanks to Cory for adding me to the team. Things has been rather sparse around FA:OSX lately. Maybe all the migrations that are going to happen have happened. Naw, that can't be!

How can we serve you, the reader, better? I know we all try and put content here when we feel that it's relevant, but there may be a lot of stuff that we aren't posting because we don't know that you would find it relevant. So, feel free to drop some hints in the comments if you're feeling a little -v today.

  • Not to be an ingrate, but with only 8 posts in the last month (6 of them from 2 of you) and that long list of contributors, I wonder what's going on. Everyone on vacation, I guess. (Make me a contributor and I'll post once a month!)

Maybe the theme of migrators has to be dropped. Is that really central now, or is it more about sharing intriguing OS X info? Maybe you need to have fewer posts aimed at programmers. For my part, I'd like to see more information on freeware and shareware for music, audio, and video applications - which would seem to be strengths of the platform. (Thanks for the iTunes posts - that's a start.)

In my world - editing for television - the migration that's happening is from Avid (now essentially moved to PCs with the Adrenaline system) to Final Cut. And there is potential for RSS enabled media distribution that could kick the whole thing open. See Adam Curry, Drazen Pantic, Doc's musings on radio, etc., if you haven't already. Or I'll pull it together for you!

I already look to MacSlash, BB, MacMinute, and Daily Wireless for other stuff. Also Apple Airport Weblog, another great site with infrequent posts (thanks, Glenn). But you guys have a niche that should be expanded.

And too bad that a commenter has to sign up for a blogger profile to post under his name here. Why do I need to have yet another profile, yet another sign-in? But that's the way it is. Asi es.

Anyway, thanks for all past posts. It's because I check you guys every day that I want to see more.

  • Perhaps you could have a special color for Forwarding Address: OS X, to ensure that posts are meant for FA: OS X (instead of politics). I don't mind the politics myself (Democracy isn't a spectator sport!), but I could do without gripes about the occasional post.

I think that's a really good idea. The theme made sense when I started the blog waaay back in 2001 but not any longer.

Dave also said: "Maybe you need to have fewer posts aimed at programmers." I think the problem is that most of the contributing authors right now really are programmers or otherwise in the industry. We don't really scour the web for tidbits to put on this blog, we post what we run across.

"And too bad that a commenter has to sign up for a blogger profile to post under his name here. Why do I need to have yet another profile, yet another sign-in?" I work on Blogger and we're going to fix that.

Dave, as a creative professional using OS X, one blog you might find interesting is CreativeBitsClay, the political posts weren't intentional and were moved to the intended blog.

  • I think that the "migration" theme has been dropped, at least since the last few months... I can't even find a recent post that mentions migrating.

I think there's a place for this blog, but maybe it should evolve to be more consciously what it seems to be becoming, that is a thoughtful mac-centric blog for the developer mindset--not just for developers, but also for that specific kind of user who is willing to hack around with their mac to get things done, the intellectual poweruser I guess, although that phrase makes me uncomfortable.

But yeah, more posting would be good..although I still check every day =)
